Our Coaches
Below are the coaches who train and inspire our young athletes.
Elissa Hopkins
Peterborough Pirates Club President
Kirk Hopkins
Coach
Kirk has been involved with the Pirates for about 7 years, introduced to the sport by his sister. He started out doing races in the Subaru series and made it all the way to the Age Group World Championships. He loves triathlon so much, he does not do any other sports currently (because swimming, biking and running is really enough!)
Kathy Eggenberger
Coach
Kathy has been involved with the Pirates for 16 years. She is a three-time Age Group World Championships racer, and has completed triathlon races short and long over the years and also participated in Xterra racing. She has been head coach of the club since 2021. When not coaching triathlon you can find her doing any kind of cycling (cyclocross, road cycling, mountain biking and yes, dirt biking!), downhill or cross-country skiing or wake surfing.
Janine Theben
Back up Coach
This is Janine’s third year with the Pirates after moving to Peterborough a few years ago, although prior to this she coached with Milton Tornado Triathlon Club for 7 years. She started triathlon in University, joining the Queen’s University Triathlon Team. Since then she has always been involved in the sport, either racing, or now coaching, cheering and volunteering.
Jeremy Tucker
Coach
Jeremy has been with the club for 9 years, joining the ranks when one of his kids was just 6 years old. He has been racing triathlons for over 30 years and has raced almost every distance, including at an elite level. He loves everything about Triathlon and is excited to share his passion with youth in our community.
David Kubica
Coach
Dave has been involved with the Pirates for around 8 years. He has 35 years of training and racing experience from Olympic distance to Ironman at events both near and far. He got involved with the club while introducing the sport of triathlon to his children. Dave also coaches high school sports such as volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Nordic skiing and he enjoys most outdoor activities both on land and water!
Scott Murison
Coach
Scott was brought into the fold of triathlon by his wife Kathy. He has been involved with the Pirates for over 10 years. He has ‘filled the pack’ in many races through the years as well as completing one ½ Ironman and one Worlds Olympic race. He likes helping athletes to reach their goals. When not coaching he can be found cycling, doing enduro or gracing the floors of WildRock Outfitters.
Matt McLaughlin
Coach
Matt has been involved with the Pirates for 2 years now. He has a wealth of experience coaching other sports such as golf, skiing and hockey and was a mentor for young hockey referees with the OMHA. When asked to help out this year, he just couldn’t say no!
Gayle Peters
Coach
Gayle has been involved in triathlon since 1990 and with the Pirates for the past 9 years. She has a wealth of coaching experience, having coached many sports at the secondary school where she teaches. When not coaching Gayle loves to be involved in sports like canoeing, cycling, riding, running, waterskiing, hiking or swimming.
